Jo Rivera knew at some point, her pre-game ritual would pay off. Chances are didn't know it would help send the Lady Deer softball team to its second consecutive regional final after a dramatic ending to a 6-3 victory over Cinco Ranch in Game 2 of the Region 3 semifinals Saturday at the University of Houston.

Deer Park had already recorded two outs, but the Lady Cougars had the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh with power-hitter Brittany Nollkamper at the plate. Caitlin Plocheck, brought in relief for starting pitcher Payton McBride, threw a wild pitch that got by DP catcher Rivera. The ball ricocheted back to Rivera, who fired a strike to Rhonda Jarvis at third base, picking off Cinco Ranch's Hannah Esser to end the game.

McBride got the win in both games of the series, striking out a total of 19 batters. Plocheck got the save in the decisive Game 2.

Rivera said prior to every game, she goes behind the plate and throws the ball at the backstop to learn the bounces of the nooks and crannies. She was perfectly positioned when the ball came bouncing back.

"We made some mistakes that we could not overcome against a guy that's that good and he did a good job," Head Coach Chris Rupp said. "Give him all the credit."

Two RBIs from Caitlin Plocheck and an 11-strikeout, one-hit performance by Payton McBride gave the Lady Deer softball team a 2-0 win over Cinco Ranch in Game 1 of their best-of-three series Friday night.

The series is being played at the University of Houston's softball complex. Game 2 will be played Saturday at 2 p.m., followed by Game 3, if necessary 30 minutes following the conclusion of Game 2.

Plocheck smacked the first pitch she saw from the Lady Cougars' Kayla Ober over the leftfield fence to give Deer Park the early 1-0 lead.

Cinco Ranch threatened in the top of the fourth. With a runner on base and two outs, Cinco Ranch catcher Brittany Nollkamper struck a towering drive to deep centerfield. Centerfielder Devann Hebert made a tremendous running and jumping catch at the wall to squelch the rally.

An overflow crowd of citizens and past and present city leaders from Deer Park and the surrounding area gathered at the Battleground at Deer Park Golf Course to say thank you to outgoing Mayor Wayne Riddle.

City Manager Jay Stokes, who acted as the event's master of ceremonies, pointed out the differences in the world between 1981 – when Riddle was first elected as a city councilman – and 2013.

"I was about to finish fifth grade. Pope John Paul II was shot. Sandra Day O'Conner was the first woman selected to the Supreme Court," Stokes said.

Raiders of the Lost Ark and the top songs were Bette Davis Eyes, Endless Love, Lady, Celebration and Elvira.

A first-class stamp was 15 cents.
