Pound schedules meeting with voters to talk about city budget

E-mail Print PDF

Deer Park residents with questions about the proposed city budget plans can voice their concerns on Saturday, July 31. Councilman Jeff Pound, who holds Position 6, is hosting a town hall-style meeting regarding the budget at Fairmont Funeral Home in Pasadena at 3 p.m.

"This is not an official city meeting," Pound said. "It's a chance for people to talk about their concerns and get some answers regarding the city budget."

The proposed 2010-11 city budget has been met with spending concerns due to a budget shortfall from industry property values. Pound said he intends to address those concerns with the voters.

Rolling Thunder brings POW/MIA issues to light at Rotary

When members of the armed forces return home from their tour of duty, it is either a celebratory or somber scene. Some families never see either situation come to fruition because their loved one was either captured or missing in action. Tom Christ of Rolling Thunder, a veterans advocacy group, was this week's guest speaker at the Deer Park Rotary Club. He talked about the tasks at home and abroad to help families earn closure for their service member captured or considered missing in action.

Founded in 1987 Rolling Thunder, Inc. is a class 501(c)(4) non-profit organization with more than 88 chapters throughout the United States. Its membership has veterans and non-veterans who are united in the cause to bring full accountability for POWs and MIAs of all wars, reminding the government, the media and the public by their watchwords, "We Will Not Forget."

DPISD extends limited open enrollment Aug. 2

Parents of children who live outside Deer Park ISD's boundaries will soon have another chance to enroll their children in selected DPISD schools as the district extends its successful Limited Open Enrollment [LOE] program. From Aug. 2-13, the district will accept applications for enrollment from non-resident students.

"Limited Open Enrollment is a win-win situation for the district and parents who live outside our boundaries," Deputy Superintendent for Administration Don Dean said. "By allowing non-resident students to enroll in Deer Park, we've given these children the opportunity to benefit from our outstanding instructional program. DPISD received a Recognized rating for eight of the last 10 years, culminating with the district's current Recognized rating. Enrolling these students allows Deer Park to retain more of its local tax revenue." The state's school finance system is based on enrollment. If enrollment increases through LOE, the district sends less of its tax revenue to the state through the "Robin Hood" plan. Additional students also help balance a steady decline in regular enrollment over the last few years.

DPISD approves across-the-board pay raise

Tuesday's Deer Park ISD Board of Trustees combined workshop and regular meeting proved to be a busy evening. The first order of business was to install Mike Mills as the Board's newest member. Mills, was asked by and appointed to the Board to fill the unexpired term of Board member Jack Beckham, Jr., who resigned last month.

Among the measures approved by the Board was an across-the-board salary increase for DPISD employees, including a starting salary for a first-year, no-experience teacher of $49,000.

The pay raise comes on the heels of a 2009 state legislature-mandated step-increase for teachers, nurses, counselors, librarians and speech pathologists for the 2009-10 school year. School districts across the state contend the legislation was unclear about whether the increase included the 2010-11 school year.

Police caution drivers, charity carwashers on safety, ordinance

E-mail Print PDF

Most every weekend in Deer Park, a charitable organization or booster club is hosting a carwash to pay for its expenses for equipment, trips or scholarships. However, these popular events are causing hazards on the city's roadways and the Deer Park Police Department is trying to stop a tragedy before it happens.

Lt. Bryan Magee, who oversees the department's patrol division, said DPPD has received citizen complaints about participants in roadways, sidewalks and esplanades – all of which is illegal according to city ordinances.

"What happens is it creates a distraction to the drivers," Magee said. "We understand the need for organizations to host these events so that they can make some money for what they do. But, it needs to be done in a safe way for themselves and those driving in the streets."
