A few minutes with Debbie Westbeld

E-mail Print PDF

This week, we spend a few minutes with Debbie Westbeld, economic development administrator for the city of Deer Park.

InsideDP.com: Where are you from originally?

Debbie Westbeld: I'm from Corpus Christi and graduated from Carroll High School there. I grew up there, left when I was 17. I don't have any relatives there anymore, so I don't really get to visit. I attended Texas Tech in Lubbock, but finished back home at Corpus Christi State University, which is now Texas A&M Corpus Christi. My major was marketing.

What did you do after you graduated from CCSU?

I went straight to San Antonio and worked for USAA Insurance and then Dunn and Bradstreet as a business analyst. My territory was Austin, so I drove there almost every day and so I fell in love with Austin. A few years later, we moved there. I got a job with what is now the TCEQ and was there for about six years. From there, I came to Houston 15 years ago.

Back to school means time for patience on DP roadways

As summer vacation winds down, Deer Park police are asking drivers to be mindful as streets will be filled with traffic and students beginning Monday, the first day of school.

DPPD Sgt. John White, who oversees the department's traffic division, said it would be helpful if parents would familiarize themselves with the routes to and from their child's school. "It's also important that parents know the locations of the pick-up and drop-off points at the campus," he said. "The more parents know and follow the correct routes, the faster we can keep traffic moving."

White said the area around College Park Elementary (in the La Porte school district) is expected to see some major delays as the school has changed its pick-up and drop-off locations. Buses and day care vans will use the Luella side for pick-up and drop off. Parents who drop off their students will be re-routed to the Amherst side of the campus. For more information, call College Park Elementary at 281-604-4400.

As Deer Park continues to develop and expand its neighborhoods into areas that once provided habitats for wild animals, there has been an increase in sightings of "suburban" coyotes. Coyotes are normally cautious of humans in areas where they are harassed, hunted or trapped.
