Defense scores 3 TDs in bizarre game

In a game where the Deer gave up more than twice as many yards as they gained, it was Deer Park who found themselves on the winning side of 28-16 opening night score.

Three defensive touchdowns coupled with several Dickinson miscues assisted a Deer offense that had trouble finding a rhythm early in the game.

"It's hard to find any kind of rhythm when you only take three snaps in the first quarter," said head coach Chris Massey. "Part of that is our fault because we went three-and-out. Our defense scored twice, but that's OK."

In a bizarre first quarter, the Deer (1-0) snuffed a sustained Gator (0-1) drive forcing them to attempt a field goal. Defensive back Chandler Meyers broke through and blocked the field goal, which was picked up by Tony Gonzalez. Gonzalez ran the recovery 68 yards for a touchdown. Jacob O'Neill, who was successful on all four of his PATs added the extra point to put the Deer up 7-0.

Lady Deer sweep Sterling

E-mail Print PDF

Tuesday night was one of those nights for the Lady Deer Volleyball team. Everything seemed to go their way in a 25-13, 25-16, 25-14 sweep over Baytown Sterling at the North Campus.

In the first game of the match, the Lady Deer and Sterling went point-for-point before Deer Park took control. The Lady Rangers trailed by 13 points at one point in the set as Deer Park cruised to a 25-13 victory in the opener.

The Lady Deer had trouble putting a lot of points between themselves and Sterling before amassing eight unanswered points to put them up 18-8. However, the Lady Rangers rallied to close the gap to 19-15 before Deer Park closed the game with a 5-1 run of its own.

Sterling took its first lead, albeit short-lived, 3-1, at the beginning of the decisive third game of the set. From there Deer Park went on a 10-2 rally to go up 11-5. The Lady Rangers closed the gap at one point, 17-14, the Lady Deer put the game away for the three-game sweep.

Head coach Gay Sabatell said she was confident her team would regain control on its own after dominating most of the night.

DP's Pettitte gets All-Star nod

Deer Park's Andy Pettitte has been added to the American League All-Star team.

Representing the New York Yankees, he will replace injured Boston Red Sox pitcher Clay Buchholz for next Tuesday night's game at Angel Stadium in Anaheim.

According to ESPN, Pettitte was added to the team Monday because he was next in line in voting by AL players. The players select five starters and three relievers and Pettitte was sixth on that list. This is the third All-Star selection for Pettitte, who previously made the team in 1996 and 2001.
