DP Rotary's bicycle tour set for Sunday

Written by Bobby Vasquez. Posted in Latest

Drivers across southeast and eastern Harris County are advised to watch out for participants of the Texas Independence Bike Tour Sunday morning.

The ride, coordinated by the Deer Park Rotary Club, starts at 8 a.m. at Deer Park High School South Campus.

The Rotary Cub expects riders to be out of Deer Park by 8:30 a.m. Riders will return to the city around 10:30 a.m. and will trickle in the remainder of the morning and early afternoon. Sunday's temperatures are expected to be in the low 60s as the ride begins, topping out at 70 during the day. There is a 40 percent chance of showers.

Already almost 200 riders have pre-registered for the ride, and if the weather holds up for Sunday morning, the club expects at least that many additional riders to register on-site.

Rotary President-elect Bennie Boles said the tour would be a one-day cycling event that will tour the San Jacinto Battleground area and nearby communities while raising funds for the Deer Park Rotary's Scholarship program. The course measures from 30 to 60 miles and snakes through Deer Park, La Porte, Baytown and the Clear Lake area.

According to Boles, participants are arriving from as far away as Harlingen within Texas and Tennessee from out of state.

This year's bike tour is listed as an official practice ride of the BP MS 150. Any riders who are practicing for the popular Houston-to-Austin bike ride in the spring are encouraged to participate. The ride is also open to anyone who has an interest in medium- to long-distance bike rides.

There will be three routes for riders of different skill levels, 30 miles, 42 miles and 60 miles. Registration is $35. Registration includes the riding fee, a T-shirt and local business offers for the riders.
