Chamber accepting applications for Leadership Deer Park

Written by Bobby Vasquez. Posted in Latest

Residents of, and business owners and persons who work in Deer Park and the Deer Park ISD service area invited to participate in the annual Leadership Deer Park workshop starting next month.

Tim Culp, CEO of the Deer Park Chamber of Commerce, said the workshop is a dedication to building a network of potential leaders for present and future roles throughout the community. Leadership Deer Park encourages and fosters the development of community leaders from all segments of the Deer Park area to broaden the volunteer leadership base; show that leadership is not only an honor, but a public responsibility; identify and train new and emerging leaders for effective voluntary participation and community affairs; provide opportunities for communication between emerging and established leadership; and to be a source of qualified, trained leadership for public and private agencies, organizations, planning bodies and commissions.

"It's for anyone who wants to enhance the quality of life we have in Deer Park," he said.

For Sheri Brown, a student in last year's Leadership Deer Park, the experience was "absolutely outstanding," she said.

"I grew up here, graduated from here and work here. But, I really didn't know that much about what makes the community work. It was an eye-opening experience. I'm actually kind of sad that I can't do again."

Leadership Deer Park's applications are available at the Deer Park Chamber of Commerce office at 110 Center St. The seminar is $800, which includes lodging for a retreat, transportation and lodging in Austin for legislative meetings and other expenses. Applications are due Aug. 6.

Following an August orientation and September retreat, Leadership Deer Park meets once a month for an eight-hour day. Topics covered include city and county government, facilities, emergency management and health care, education, legislative, and a tour of industry and the Houston Port Authority facilities.

Wayne Slovacek, who facilitated Leadership Deer Park since its inception, said it was born from people wanting more information on how the community works and is structured.

"Now, it gives people an opportunity to appreciate the community, what it actually takes to make it work and how to be involved to get things started," he said.
