Persons fighting their personal wars against alcoholism will have a new resource starting Thursday. Deer Park United Methodist Church at 1300 E. 13th St. will begin host Alcoholic's Anonymous meetings every Thursday at 8 p.m. Anyone who is interested may attend.
Before the founding of this AA organization, recovering alcoholics had to rely on clubs in Baytown and Pasadena for group support or be members of organizations that had meetings that were closed to outsiders.
"To the best of my knowledge, there hasn't been an AA group that was open to everyone since at least 1983," said Lynn C., who helped organize the chapter. "We have some groups in Deer Park who do a great job in helping people fight their addictions, but they have a closed membership for important reasons. Our club is open to men and women who need our support."
Founded in 1935 AA is known worldwide as a support group for men and women from all walks of life to seek group guidance in their battle with alcoholism. There are almost 56,700 AA groups in the United States and 2.1 million members worldwide.
"AA is a valuable resource because it can be a gateway to so many different directions for families where alcoholism is occurring," said Lynn C. "It's a resource for anyone who is fighting for sobriety."
Like other AA meetings, this will be led by recovering alcoholics. It is also a non-smoking meeting. For more information, contact Lynn C. at 713-855-0990.
