The Deer Park boys basketball season ended this week with a 66-43 first-round loss Atascocita. The boys team finished the 2016-17 season 21-13 overall, running off an impressive winning streak to force a one-game playoff to enter the postseason.

They came back from an 0-5 district start to tie for a postseason berth. They came back against a Sam Rayburn team that defeated them twice in the regular season to win a tiebreaker game in thrilling, overtime fashion.

But Monday night, the big comeback was not to be as the team fell 66-43 in the bidistrict round of the state playoffs.

The Deer were led by Zach Walker’s 10-point night while Dylan Bradshaw had nine points. Bradley Wagner led the team with eight rebounds, followed by Tyler Kent’s five-rebound effort.

Early on, Deer Park hung close to the Eagles, who appeared in last year’s state championship game. However, after leading the Deer 20-13 after the first quarter, Atascocita outscored Deer Park 33-11 in the second and third quarters to pull away.

The Deer outscored the Eagles 19-13 in the fourth quarter, but by then the lead was too much for the Deer to overcome.
