Lady Deer soccer victory over South Houston comes with added challenge

Written by Adrian Romero. Posted in Sports

The Lady Deer soccer team kept their momentum with a 6-0 district win over South Houston Tuesday.

Deer Park got on the board early, thanks to back-to-back goals from Nylah Shepherd and Madelyn Hill. Two more Lady Deer goals sent the teams to halftime with Deer Park up 4-0.

Lady Deer Head Coach Jesse Saavedra, always looking to challenge his team, put nine players on the field in the second half while South Houston kept 11 . The team rose up to the challenge, finding the back of the net twice while playing shorted-handed.

Gabby McDonald, who added a second-half goal, said keeping the team challenged and uncomfortable will pay off later.

"I feel like we moved the ball really well the whole game, and we're looking better and better each week. Playing in kind of an easier district is good because we win, but bad because there's a possibility of us getting too relaxed,” she said. “Coach Saavedra doesn't let this happen, and finds things like what you saw in the second half to make sure we don't lose our touch when playoffs come.”

Next up for the team is a road match at Sam Rayburn Friday at 6 p.m.
