A seven-run fifth inning in Game 2 propelled the Lady Deer softball team to a two-game sweep over Goose Creek Memorial Friday night. Deer Park’s Erin Edmoundson pitched five strong innings, striking out six and allowing two hits to earn the win.

The Lady Deer peppered Memorial for 15 hits, getting on the board for the first time in the second inning. Courtesy runner Alaina Cortez scored on one of three Patriot errors to put Deer Park up 1-0.

Then came the big fifth inning where Deer Park rallied for eight hits and seven runs. Alyssa Hernandez started the scoring barrage with an RBI single, plating Makayla Chamberlain who had doubled earlier in the inning.

Maleah Olvera and Edmoundson hit back-to-back infield singles, with Edmoundson’s hit scoring Hernandez. Olvera later came around to score on a passed ball to make the score 4-0.

The Deer Park offense continued its assault, with Ashlynn Wade’s RBI single. A few batters later, Amaya Montano’s 2-run single put Deer Park up 7-0. Hernandez got her second RBI of the inning when she drove in KK Morado to lift Deer Park to an 8-0 lead.

Another Memorial error in the sixth inning scored Jasie Roberts and Cortez. Julia York came in in relief of Edmoundson and got a 1-2-3 inning to end the game and the series.

Game 1 of the best-of-three series is Friday at Doll Forrest Field at 7 p.m. Game 2 will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Friendswood. If necessary, Game 3 will be played Saturday night at Pearland Dawson at 7 p.m.
