Photo by Travis Young/Deer Park Photos. An eight-run third inning highlighted Deer Park’s 12-2 run rule victory over Summer Creek Saturday at Kethan Field to complete a two-game sweep in the first round of the playoffs.

The Deer jumped out to a 2-0 lead after a pair of Clay Aguilar (3-4, 2 2B, 3 RBI) and Chris Vela (2-3, RBI) hits in the first two innings.

In the third inning, the proverbial floodgates opened. Starting pitcher Aguilar again helped his own cause when his single drove in Austin Mitchell. Two batters later, Blake Martin’s grounder to shortstop was misplayed, allowing Chase Keng and Connor Berry to touch the plate.

Reese Moon kept the rally going when he singled in Martin to put the Deer up 6-0. During the next at bat, Martin scored when Summer Creek successfully picked off courtesy runner Tyler Stenburg at first base.

With one out, the rally kept going when Mark Barrow walked and Vela and Blaine Holden hit back-to-back singles to load the bases for the Deer.

Mitchell drew a bases loaded walk and Keng followed with a smash single to right to plate Vela and Holden to push the score to 10-0.

Summer Creek temporarily avoided being run-ruled with a two-run fifth to reduce the deficit to 10-2. However in the bottom of the fifth, RBIs by Aguilar and Josiah Ortiz ended the game with a 12-2 Deer victory.

Aguilar took the win pitching 4 and two-thirds innings, scattering five hits and five walks, and two runs while striking out five. Ortiz came on and got the final batter in two pitches.

Next up for the Deer is a three-game set against Pearland. Game 1 is Thursday at 7:30 p.m., followed by Game 2 on Friday, also at 7:30 p.m. If needed, Game 3 will be played Saturday at 2 p.m. All games will be at Pearland High School.

In Game 1 at Summer Creek, the Deer needed extra-inning heroics to grab the series lead.

The Bulldogs took a 4-0 lead into the fifth inning before the Deer rallied for three runs. With Mitchell and Aguilar on base, Ortiz smashed a double to left field, scoring Mitchell to cut the lead to 4-1. Ortiz’s double was only Deer Park’s second base hit of the game. Two batters later, Moon doubled in Aguilar and Ortiz to shave the deficit to 4-3.

In the sixth inning, Keng hit another Deer Park double, scoring Mitchell to tie the game at 4.

The game went into extra innings, and in the eighth, a Summer Creek error on a Holden ground ball scored Barrow to give Deer Park its first lead at 5-4.

Peyton Sherlin went the first 3 and two-thirds innings, giving up seven hits, three walks and four runs while striking out six. Adrian Gonzalez, came on and got the win in relief, going the last 4 and a third, giving up only two hits and a walk while striking out six of his own.
