The Lady Deer softball team rallied from a one-game to none deficit to defeat Kingwood and advance in the state playoffs. Deer Park won Game 2 4-3 to force a decisive third game. The Lady Deer won the third game 4-2 to punch their ticket to the next round.

The Lady Deer softball team found itself in unfamiliar territory following Wednesday’s Game 1 loss at Kingwood in the Region III quarterfinals. Needing two wins to advance to the next round against Cypress Ranch, Deer Park won Game 2 to force a winner-take-all third game. The Lady Deer rebounded all the way to take Game 3 and keep its Austin dreams alive.

In Game 3, Kingwood struck first with a solo home run to right field off Deer Park starter Erin Edmoundson to take a 1-0 lead. Deer Park drew even in the bottom of the inning when three straight singles plated Mckayla Chamberlain.

In the fourth, Alyssa Hernandez gave Deer Park the lead for good with her bases loaded double to left field. Hernandez drove in all four Deer Park runs in support of Edmoundson, who gave up two runs on four hits to send the Lady Deer to the next round.

In Game 2, Deer Park scored three first-inning runs and added another in the third to hold on to a 4-3 victory. Sara Vanderford went 3-3 while Hernandez scored two runs. Maleah Olvera had a pair of RBIs in the win.

Deer Park’s next series is against Cypress Ranch in a best-of-three series. Game 1 is Thursday at Northshore High School at 7 p.m. Game 2 follows on Friday at Thompkins High School in Katy at 7 p.m. If a third game is eeded, the site, day and time will be determined. The winner of this series plays the winner of Katy and Atascocita in the Region III final and a spot in the state tournament in Austin.
