A walk-off double from Sara Vanderford capped off an emotional 4-3 victory for the Lady Deer softball team in 10 innings over Katy. The Game 1 win in the regional final puts Deer Park one victory away from punching their ticket to Austin. Game 2 is today at 5 p.m. at the University of Houston.

Photo by Andrew Pressley/Deer Park Photos.Sara Vanderford saw more pitches in the game’s final at bat than her two teammates combined in the 10 inning. But it was the last pitch of the eight-pitch at bat that mattered the most. Vanderford flied a double to right field scoring Maleah Olvera for a walk-off 4-3 victory over Katy in Game 1 of the 6A Region III semifinal.

Katy scored first in the last two teams standing in Region III with back-to-back batters in the first to take a 2-0 lead.

Deer Park pulled in even in the bottom of the fifth inning with a pair of RBI singles. The Lady Deer took a 3-2 lead in the sixth with Vanderford’s RBI double plated Erin Edmoundson.

An out away from a Game 1 victory in the top of the seventh, Katy found a miracle to tie the game.

A bunt down the third base line was fielded cleanly by Deer Park’s KK Morado, but as she attempted to throw to Vanderford covering first base, Vanderford was blocked by the umpire. Morado’s throw skipped all the way to the right field corner, allowing batter Tori Whitlock to score on a bunted inside the park home run.

Still, the Lady Deer had an opportunity to take a series edge in the bottom of the inning when they had two on with two outs, but could not push across the winning run.

Base runners came and went in the extras before Vanderford’s walk-off heroics in the bottom of the 10th gave Deer Park the Game 1 victory.

Game 2 is at 5 p.m. at the University of Houston, broadcasted live on the Deer Network at www.deernetwork.com
