The Deer baseball team is one series win away from a berth in the state tournament following a 5-2 victory over Ridge Point. The win sealed a 2-1 series win and placed the Deer in the Region III baseball finals for the second consecutive year. Next up for the Deer is Fort Bend Travis.

After falling in Game 2 of a best-of-three playoff series, the Deer baseball team snagged a 5-2 winner-take-all Game 3 victory over Ridge Point Saturday afternoon.

Deer Park got on the board in the top of the first with a bases-loaded no-outs single by Clay Aguilar, scoring Conner Berry. Josiah Ortiz followed with a sacrifice fly to centerfield, driving in Blaine Holden. The Deer rally was cut short with a runner picked off on the bases and a fly out to end the inning.

With the two-run cushion, Aguilar shut down the Panther’s offense. He didn’t allow a hit until the fourth inning, surrendering five hits and two unearned runs overall. Aguilar struck out four and walked two in the complete game effort.

Deer Park extended the lead to 5-0 in the sixth inning, started by Austin Mitchell driving in Tyler Stenberg. After an error and walk loaded the bases, Chase Keng drove in Mitchell and Berry to put the Deer up by five.

The Panthers finally touched Aguilar for a couple of runs in the sixth before he shut them down in the seventh.

The Deer face off with Fort Bend Travis in the Region III finals this week. A venue and times will be announced later this week.
