With an emotional series sweep over Katy, the Lady Deer softball team punched its ticket to the state tournament Saturday, winning 6-5.

Deer Park built a five-run lead going into the fifth inning before the Lions came roaring back.

The Lady Deer opened the scoring in the first when Alaina Hernadez’s bunt was misplayed, scoring McKayla Chamberlain, who doubled to open the game. Deer Park made the game 2-0 when Erin Edmoundson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Edmoundson broke the game open in the fifth inning with a long three-run homer to centerfield to give Deer Park a 5-0 advantage. However in the bottom of the inning, Katy touched Deer Park pitching for five runs to tie the game at five apiece.

For the second straight game, late inning heroics vaulted the Lady Deer to victory when Maddie Nelson’s pop fly was misplayed in the infield, scoring Jacie Roberts from third base.

Katy put two runners on with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but Nelson induced a pop out and a ground ball to send the Lady Deer back to Austin.

Deer Park will face defending state champion Keller at 3 p.m. Friday at Red and Charline McCombs Field on the campus of the University of Texas. The winner will play the next evening against the winner of Austin Bowie and Northside Brennan for the state title at 6 p.m. All Deer Park games will be broadcast on the Deer Network at
