The Lady Deer volleyball team got off to a hot start in District play with a 3-0 sweep over visiting South Houston Friday night. Deer Park is scheduled to travel to Sam Rayburn Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. for its next match.

The Deer Park volleyball team swept South Houston 25-5, 25-6, 25-7 Friday night in the District 22-6A opener.

In the first set, both teams shook off a little rust as they had little practice and game time in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.

Lady Deer senior Alysse Harrell praised how the team responded to the storm.

"We work hard every day in practice since we got back and we hope to get back to where we were before the hurricane and continue to get better,” she said.

Once the teams got into their groove, the rallies became more competitive and lasted longer. A strong serving series by Hannah Baker gave Deer Park an edge and kept the match relatively in control.

A dominant Lady Deer front line took over in the second set, doing well both offensively and defensively.

Hope Hawthorne said the strength of the Deer net game comes from teamwork and athletic ability.

"We're all friends off the court so that chemistry really shows when we play. I think we have some pretty good reflexes and leg strength so we can jump high. If you look at us we're all on the taller side so that helps out a lot too,” she said.

The third set was tight in the early points, with SoHo fighting to rally. However Deer Park managed to gain control of the game with well-placed spikes to finish off the game for the sweep.

Next up for the Lady Deer is a road match at Sam Rayburn Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
