The Lady Deer Basketball team soundly defeated South Houston Tuesday night 59-24. The win squares Deer Park’s district record at 5-5. Next up is a road game at Sam Rayburn, which is a game in front of Deer Park for the fourth and final playoff spot with two games to play.

It was all Deer Park in the first quarter, with the offense finding holes in South Houston’s defense, and managing the game’s pace. The Lady Deer also stepped up big on defense, shutting out the Lady Trojans in the first quarter.

South Houston found a spark at the beginning of the second quarter, going on a 5-0 run before Deer Park got on the board again. The remainder of the second quarter showcased the Lady Deer speed, rebounding, and versatility as Darcie Culp, Enriqua Bellow, MKayla Bush, Alyssa Castillo, and Madison Jordan-White contributed to the 14-2 run that would last the remainder of the quarter. The first half would end heavily in Deer Park’s favor, 28-7.

Lady Deer Head Coach Theresa White praised the aggressiveness of her team, while also adding how important it is for her team to play all out at this point in the season.

“I told the girls at halftime that we have nothing to lose. We just have to get back out there and do what we know we’re capable of doing without playing scared. We really dug ourselves in a hole this season and in order for us to get out of this hole we have to play hard the whole game every game, which is how i felt we did tonight,” said White.

The second half started with South Houston trying to press Deer Park to force some mistakes, but the Lady Deer stayed focused and managed to get past the press. Defensively, Deer Park’s press was far more productive, forcing turnovers and limiting South to eight points in the third quarter.

Deer Park didn’t let its foot off the gas in the final quarter, continuing to full-court press and attack on offense. The Lady Deer also managed to keep the ball out of SoHo’s hands by continuing to grab boards and ended up outrebounding the Trojans 35-24 at the end of the game.

Freshman guard Bellow led all scorers with 16 points and 7 rebounds. While Bush chipped in 11 points. Victoria Viaclovsky had six boards on the night.

“It’s kinda hard to play that long and still produce, but you get used to it so you can help your team get a win. It’s a good feeling to have Coach’s trust and be out there as long as I am, as a freshman, and to just handle the ball and play the game I love with my team,” Bellow said.

Next up for the Lady Deer is a road game at Sam Rayburn at 7 p.m. Friday.

On the boys side the Deer lost their second straight game, falling at South Houston 45-42. Deer Park was outscored 19-10 in the second quarter, which provided South Houston enough padding to squeak by with the win.

The Deer were led 16-point, 13-rebound night. Brad Milliorn was also in double figures with 13 points while Zach Walker added 10 points in the effort.

The Deer look to get back to its winning ways with a home game against Sam Rayburn Friday at Watkins Gym. Tip off is set for 7 p.m.
