Perras UHImage provided by University of Houston Golf.Former Deer Park standout and University of Houston junior Michael Perras drained a short putt on the first playoff hole to capture the 2017 American Athletic Conference Championships individual title on Tuesday afternoon at Innisbrook Golf Club.

Tied with USF’s Cristian DiMarco at 1-under 212 after 54 holes, the two student-athletes replayed No. 18 on the first playoff hole. Both players put their drives in the middle of the fairway, but DiMarco’s approach shot went well left of the green.

Perras was left with a 60-foot birdie putt but left the ball short of the hole. DiMarco nearly chipped in from rough on his par try but saw the ball go five feet past the hole.

Perras pushed his par attempt two feet past the hole, but after DiMarco missed his bogey putt, Perras made the short putt for the third individual title of his career but his first American Athletic Conference championship.

With his impressive performance this week, Perras became the first player in Houston history to win an NCAA Regional title and a conference tournament championship. He captured the 2016 NCAA Franklin Regional with a score of 16-under 200 a year ago.

As he was throughout the tournament, Perras was steady in Tuesday’s Final Round with two birdies and only two bogeys on the way to an even-par 71.

As a team, the Cougars tied for second with Cincinnati with a three-day, 54-hole total of 872 on the 7,125-yard, par-72 Copperhead Course. No. 46 UCF finished fourth at 877 with Memphis (881), SMU (884), UConn (884), East Carolina (898) and Temple (902) following.

SMU’s Gray Townsend and USF’s Jimmy Jones tied for third at 213, while Gonzalez was joined in a tie for fifth by Cincinnati’s Austin Squires.

Junior Papito Gonzalez joined Perras among the top-10 leaders after firing the team’s low round of the day with a 70. The McAllen, Texas, native drained a birdie on the par-3 fourth hole to put his Final Round on a good start.

Following a bogey on No. 7, Gonzalez made his second and final birdie of the day on the par-5 14th hole and ended the tournament with four straight pars for to tie for fifth at 214 – a career-best finish at The American Championships.

Competing in his final American Championships, senior Matt Scobie enjoyed an even-par 71 in Tuesday’s round and tied for 15th at 221. The Ajax, Ontario, native started his day with back-to-back birdies and added two more birdies on his front nine.

After fourth straight pars to open his back nine, Scobie enjoyed the team’s lone eagle of the day on the 14th hole.

Sophomore Matt Williams tied for 30th at 226, while redshirt freshman Zach Tracy tied for 43rd at 232.

With the completion of The American Championships, the Cougars will learn their NCAA postseason fate. The NCAA Selection Show will air at 11 a.m., Thursday, May 4, on Golf Channel.

The Cougars look to be sent to one of these six NCAA Regional sites: University Club (Baton Rouge, La.); The Grove (Murfreesboro, Tenn.); Kampen Course (West Lafayette, Ind.); Stanford Golf Course (Stanford, Calif.); UT Golf Club (Austin, Texas) or Washington National Golf Club (Auburn, Wash.).
