Seminoles lock up 3 spots in GCPFL Super Bowl

The Deer Park Seminoles are sending three teams to the GCPFL Super Bowl. All games will be played at Rice Stadium Saturday. Game times are Pee Wee at 8 a.m., Sophomore at noon, and Senior 4 p.m.

Pee Wee
The Pee Wee Seminoles punched their ticket to the 2016 Super Bowl after a dominating performance over Dickinson with a 33-0 win over the Lions Saturday morning.

The Noles scored five touchdowns on the ground with quarterback Hayden LaFrenz and tailback Cameron Gonzalez tallying two scores a piece. Fullback Ayden Benavides also found the end zone with a touchdown of his own.

Deer set for playoffs after win over Memorial

The Deer Park High School football team returns to the playoffs, clinching second place and 22-6A’s top Division I seed with a 21-8 victory over Pasadena Memorial. The Deer will host the Atascocita High School Eagles, who finished second in 21-6A Friday night at 7 p.m. at Abshier Stadium.

Seven SJC Gators taken in MLB draft

The Los Angeles Dodgers selected sophomore Devin Smeltzer in the fifth round of the draft. Smeltzer, a 6-3, 185 pound left-handed pitcher, was selected 161st overall. Smeltzer is a Voorhees, NJ (Bishop Eustace Prep) native who transferred to SJC from Florida Gulf Coast University. He made 15 starts this season with a 1.18 ERA, striking out 128 with 23 walks in 91.2 innings pitched. In San Jacinto's deep run in the National Junior College Athletic Association JUCO World Series, Smeltzer struck out 20 in a complete game against Chattahoochee College, helping advance to the national title game. He was also one of three players to earn a spot on the all-tournament team.

The Arizona Diamondbacks selected freshman catcher Ryan January in the eighth round with the 239th overall pick. January, 6-3 and 195 pounds, is from Swampscott, Mass. (Swampscott HS). He had 142 put outs and a fielding percentage of .994 this season. January earned a spot on the JUCO World Series all-tournament team after helping SJC to the national runner-up.

Sophomore Cody Nesbit was selected by the Kansas City Royals in the 22nd round of the draft. Nesbit hails from La Porte (La Porte HS). At 6-3 and 175 pounds, the right handed pitcher was selected 673rd overall. He had 78 strikeouts and 10 walks this season, with an ERA of 0.80 in 45.0 innings pitched.

Sophomore Brandon Montgomery was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 26th round of the draft. The second baseman had 116 assists, 22 double plays and 64 put outs this season. He is a six foot, 180 pound Collierville, Tenn. (Collierville HS) native who transferred to SJC from the University of Memphis. Montgomery was selected 791st overall.

Infielder Nick Shumpert was selected 829th overall by the Atlanta Braves in the 28th round of the draft. Shumpert is from Lone Tree, Colo. (Lone Tree HS). The 5-11, 180-pound freshman second baseman had 93 assists, 19 double plays and 51 put outs.

The Chicago Cubs selected sophomore right-handed pitcher Montana Parsons in the 30th round of the draft. Parsons started in 13 games this season with an ERA of 2.38. He had 74 strikeouts and 20 walks in the 64.1 innings pitched. The 6-3 Parsons had 74 strikeouts and 20 walks over 64.1 innings pitched. The Conroe (College Park HS) native transferred from Texas State University to SJC. He was selected 914th overall.

The St. Louis Cardinals selected freshman outfielder Aaron Bond in the 39th round of the draft. Bond, 6-5 and 195 pounds, played in 38 games, had 12 put outs and 1 assist. He is from South Bend, Ind. (Clay HS) and was selected 1,186th overall.

SJC went 52-12 this season, earning a spot in the Junior College World Series for the 24th time in school history. The team advanced to the World Series championship game and ended the season ranked second in the country.
