Facing a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning, Lady Deer softball Head Coach Carrie Austgen had a challenge for her team.

“We had to win the last innings. One of those innings had to be big,” she said.

Challenge: Accepted.

Sparked by a four-run sixth inning, the Lady Deer advanced into the second round of the 6A state softball playoffs with a 7-2 win over Pasadena Dobie. Deer Park will take on Fort Bend Travis. Game time and location is to be announced.

Senior centerfielder Taylor McHenry put Deer Park on the board early with her first of two inside-the-park home runs. The first went down the left field line in the first inning on an odd misplay by the Dobie leftfielder.

An inning later, freshman third baseman KK Morado slapped a two-out single to center, scoring shortstop Amaya Montano to take a 2-0 lead.
