Marvin Zindler, Burt Reynolds, Dolly Parton and ZZ Top have all told the story about the town of La Grange and the infamous Chicken Ranch. This month, the Art Park Players will take their turn as the troupe presents The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. The curtain rises Feb. 10.

The City of Deer Park Parks and Recreation Department and the Art Park Players will present “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” musical over the next three weekends.

The Art Park Players’ musical, which will star Susan Mele as Miss Mona and Rusty Groos as Sheriff Ed Earl Dodd, is based on the “Chicken Ranch” of La Grange, Texas.

“Texas communities truly embrace this show – it’s definitely an audience pleaser, and we’re very excited to bring it to Deer Park,” Director David Eck said. “Of course, the musical is based on actual Texas history, and it’s amazing to see how many people have a story about the ‘Chicken Ranch’ from their own lives.”

Eck said the film adaptation of the story – which starred Dolly Parton and Burt Reynolds – is considerably different from the musical, and those who come to the musical will learn a lot more about the characters’ lives.

“In the show, you actually get to know the ‘girls,’ see their friendships and get insight into what life was really like for them,” Eck said. “It’s interesting, because as you dig into the history behind the show, you discover how strict Miss Mona really was on them, and how she gained a lot of respect in her community because of that.”

“The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” features choreography by Heather Steele and musical direction by Chad Fontenot. Technical direction is by Joe Piper and stage management by Ashley Whiting.

The full cast includes: Chad Ryan McCallon (Melvin P. Thorpe), Christina Edwards Wells (Jewel), Arnold Adair (Governor), Jana Ellsworth (Doatsy Mae), Krista M Hayes (Angel), Lacey Myers (Shy), Margo Staley (Linda Lou), Amanda Hart Bassett (Dawn, Imogene), Victoria Jayne Bryan (Ginger), Randa Peairson (Beatrice), Brianna Caldera (Taddy Jo), Nadia Hartley (Ruby Rae), Jordan Alexa Lucas (Eloise), Avery Ballard (Durla), Mitchell Craft (Senator Wingwoah), Larry Mitchell (Scruggs), Stephen Walker (Mayor Poindexter), Chad Fontenot (Edsel Mackey), Leah Moreno (Dogette), Mary Arrigo (Dogette), Tea Reyes (Dogette), Kendall Hickerson (Dogette), Alec White (Dogette, Aggie), Chris Zacharie (Dogette, Aggie), Cody Ray Strimple (Dogette, Equipment Mgr.), Anthony August (Aggie), Mason Messina (Aggie), Mitchell Denno (Aggie, Shy Kid), Nick Trevino (Aggie) and Andrew Greene (Aggie).
