A 5K this weekend will benefit an organization assisting families wishing to provide foster services. The SHOES Ministry 5K takes place at Dow Park on Saturday morning at 8 a.m. Preregistration is $33.95 while onsite registration is $40. Participants can also do a virtual 5K for $43.95.

This weekend, runners will have an opportunity to pound pavement to help families wanting to open their arms and homes to children.

The SHOES – Showing Hope by Offering Essential Supplies – Ministry is hosting a 5K fun run to help offset the costs of fostering and adopting children.

“Expenses should not stop anyone from bringing kids into your family,” said Aaron Crouch, SHOES founder. “When you bring kids into your home, those Day 1 items – beds, home supplies, school supplies, all of that costs money. If you get put into a situation where you have four kids dropped on you in one night, that’s a hit.”

Foster families do not receive financial compensation for opening their homes, however they do receive financial reimbursement, Crouch said.

“If you start fostering on Feb. 28, you won’t receive payment until March 20. That’s a big gap for buying things that you need when you add to your family,” he said.

Proceeds from the fun run go toward buying beds, bedding, home and school supplies, car seats and immediate needs for foster families and children, he said.
