Library to host programs featuring astronaut, NASA flight controller

Written by Staff. Posted in Community

The Deer Park Public Library will host two space-themed presentations in April. The first features Marianne Dyson, one of NASA’s first female flight controllers on April 27. The second presentation is from Astronaut Barry Wilmore on April 28. Both take place at the Deer Park Public Library.

From the bustling work from Mission Control to stories from the International Space Station, the Deer Park Public Library will host two space-themed programs at the end of April.

On April 27, the Friends of the Deer Park Public Library will hold a brief business meeting and elect officers prior to introducing the evening’s speaker, Marianne Dyson. Dyson’s presentation, titled “A Passion for Space,” will recount her experience as one of the first female flight controllers at NASA.

Growing up, Dyson was inspired by John Glenn and Neil Armstrong. An avid science fiction reader, she was the first woman in her family to graduate from college. She worked at Mission Control during the first five Space Shuttle flights. Following her work at NASA, Dyson has worked as a writer. Her 2015 book Welcome to Mars was co-authored with Buzz Aldrin. Copies of her books available for purchase and signing at the event.

On Friday, April 28, astronaut Barry Wilmore will speak about his experiences on the International Space Station at 11 a.m.

Refreshments will be provided after the presentation. No registration is required and all are welcome to attend. There is no admission fee. The library is located at 3009 Center St.
