Deer Park Animal Hospital hosted the eighth annual Spooktacular Howl-loween Family & Pet Extravaganza recently at the Ella and Friends Dog Park in Deer Park.

The event allowed families to bring their pets for a costume contest and other fun activities. It was held in conjunction with Spencer Animal Hospital with matching donations by both animal hospitals to raise a total of $3,043.00 donated to A New Dawn, a no-kill animal shelter.

A New Dawn is a non-profit adoption agency and shelter, providing homes and foster care for animals that would otherwise have been euthanized. The organization depends on donations, volunteers, and third-party special events, like the annual Spooktacular event.

The Nazis invaded her city when she was only 14 years old. She heard explosions and witnessed the actions of the Gestapo first hand. On Nov. 11, Johanna Wycoff will speak about her experience in Holland during World War II. The program will begin at 11 a.m. in the Deer Park Public Library’s meeting room.

Johanna de Wilde was a resident of Nijmegen, the oldest city in the Netherlands and the first Dutch city to fall under Nazi control. The area was targeted in Operation Market Garden, a controversial Allied military action. At the suggestion of her father, she kept a diary to document her family’s struggle. She translated her diary 65 years later and published it under the title Dancing in Bomb Shelters.

This presentation is the latest installment in the library’s Featured Friday series. These monthly programs offer a variety of lectures, movies and special programs of cultural, historical and local interest.

Refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Deer Park Public Library. No registration is required and all are welcome to attend. There is no admission fee. The library is located at 3009 Center St. For more information, call 281-478-7208.
