For the second time in as many years, the Deer Park community has earned another national accolade as being one of the best places to live in the United States.
Yesterday, CNN and Money magazine's online edition touted Deer Park as the 10th most affordable place to live in the United States.
"It's just 20 miles outside of Houston, but Deer Park is no commuter kingdom: Many residents work right in town at Shell's refinery and petrochemical plant. The 1,500-acre Shell complex is the nation's sixth largest refinery, employing 1,700 workers. The plant jobs pay well and the cost of living is low here," the article reads.
"This is great for our community, and it's telling the rest of the nation something that we already know," said Tim Culp, Deer Park Chamber of Commerce CEO. "Anyone who lives here, works here and raises their children in this community knows that this is a great place to be."
Debbie Westbeld, the city's economic development coordinator, said business developers have said Deer Park's thriving community is the key reason they choose to place their businesses in town.
"They go off the sheer numbers. When you have an affordable community, families tend to have a little extra money. When you have extra money, developers want to place their businesses there," she said.
Accolades like this quantify developers' decisions to place their businesses in the community. Captain Benny's a seafood restaurant is under construction and nearing completion on East Boulevard. The second phase of the Shoppes at Town Square on Center Street near Pasadena Boulevard already has operating businesses. Behind that development, construction is underway of the Providence at Town Square retirement community.
"This is something we can all be proud of," Culp said. "The city does a good job of providing amenities to it citizens. We are afforded these because of industry. All around, we have a wonderful community."
Deer Park is one of only two Texas communities to appear in the top 25 list. Lake Jackson in Brazoria County is ranked No. 2 on the same list.
Last year, Bloomberg's Business week proclaimed Deer Park as Texas' best affordable suburb after an examination of more than 850 suburbs across the country.
In addition to this top-10 accolade, Westbeld said Deer Park has been listed as a top contender as one of the nation's top places to live among America's best small towns. For more information, click here.
