Deer men fall to .500 in district play

Written by Brandon Hoffman. Posted in Boys-Sports

Tuesday, the Deer Park men’s varsity basketball team dropped further in the District 22-5A standings with a 78-56 loss at South Houston High School.

The Deer are now 3-3 in district and 11-20 overall this season. Deer Park is in fourth place in the district. South Houston has moved into first place.

“We need to work on our team defense, defensive blocking out, and preventing the dribble penetration,” said Head Coach Louie Means.

Most of South Houston’s points were in the first and fourth quarter where they outscored the Deer. Tuesday, South Houston had three different players score 12 or more points.

“They did the same thing we did to them the first game we played them,” said Means. “They had guys scoring that we didn’t expect to score.”

Leading the Deer in offense was Senior Guard Robert Martinez with 15 points. Martinez had two steals and five assists.
Post Dennis Lawton had 11 points, six rebounds, two blocks and two assists. Post Taylor Morris also had six points, six rebounds one steal, one block and one assist. Together, Lawton and Morris had 40 points in the first game between Deer Park and South Houston.

Means wants the team to make better decisions, recognize good shots and take them.

“We’ve got to get more stops,” Means said. “For us to win we have to make more stops.”

Deer Park hopes to end its three-game losing streak with a victory over Pasadena Friday. Pasadena is winless in district this season.
