Council unanimously approves employee pay raises

Deer Park City Council unanimously approved all of the items on its Tuesday night agenda. Items included pursuing an ordinance amendment to accommodate shipping containers on retail sites and pay raises for full-time city employees and police officers.

Full-time City of Deer Park employees as well as sworn police officers will receive a pay raises effective this month, following unanimous approval from Deer Park City Council Tuesday night.

Council’s approval of changes the city’s administrative manual allows police officers and certain other city employees to receive additional compensation based on their degrees and advanced certifications.

Police officers can receive an additional pay per hour for basic, intermediate and master’s certifications, a bachelor’s degree and for a master’s degree. As per department policy, all sworn police officers must have earned a four-year bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university to be considered for education.

The hourly wage hike also includes telecommunicators, arson investigators and certain public works employees. Education pay must be applicable to the employee’s current position with the city. Employees with Associates, Bachelors or Masters Degrees from an accredited four-year college or university will be paid only one education incentive for a college degree representing the highest degree acquired, according to the policy.

The city manager, assistant city manager and division directors are not eligible for education incentive pay for college degrees.

Council also unanimously approved a 2 percent cost-of-living raise for all full-time city employees. The pay raises are effective beginning the second pay period in August.

In other business, council also unanimously approved to forward a request to amend the city’s zoning ordinance to allow the use of external shipping containers under certain conditions in the general commercial district.
