A Deer Park ISD student sustained minor injuries when his bicycle crashed into  a vehicle early Monday morning. The unidentified student was taken to a local hospital as a precaution as he complained of foot and leg pain, according to police.

A Deer Park Junior High sixth grader suffered some minor scratches and scrapes after his bicycle struck a vehicle near the intersection of Luella and X Street Monday morning.

According to a witness, the student was riding his bicycle on Luella and did not stop as a car on X Street crossed into the intersection. The student struck the vehicle. The witness said the driver of the vehicle stopped and assisted the child.

The student was taken by a private vehicle to a local hospital to be checked for foot and leg pain, according to police

The driver was not cited.

DPPD Lt. Franklin Hart said emergency responders were alerted to incident at 6:58 a.m. The intersection is not regulated by school zones or watched by crossing guards, he said.

“And even if the location been regulated by the school zone signs and lights, the incident took place before the school zone would have been activated,” he said.

Hart said that although no one was seriously injured, the incident is a good reminder for both bicyclists and drivers to watch out for each other.
