Three one-yard touchdown runs were enough as Deer Park held off the Cy Fair Bobcats 21-14 Friday night at Abshier Stadium. Senior RB Shawn Oneychi ran for 96 yards and two touchdowns on a night when the Deer offense was held to 29 yards through the air.
Four unanswered Jacob O’Neill field goals in the second and third quarters were not enough as the Deer lost their first game of the season 27-20 on the road against the Aldine Mustangs.
Coming into the season, DPHS Head Football Coach Chris Massey was counting on senior running back Shawn Oneychi to carry the load for the Deer Park offense. On their first drive of the season, Onyechi didn’t get very far as the Deer went three-and-out. As it turned out, only Mother Nature could stop Onyechi. But even that didn’t last long.
He ran for 203 yards and three touchdowns in Deer Park’s 24-12 season opening win over Jersey Village Friday at Abshier Stadium. As thunder and lightning lit up the skies over Deer Park, Onyechi provided some rumbling of his own, with touchdown runs of 20, 60 and 4 yards.
“Shawn came up big for us,” said Massey. “He kept pounding and pounding and pretty much wore them down.”
