Letter to the Editor: Possible convenience store on Luella encroaches on neighborhoods

Written by Letter to the Editor. Posted in Community

I noticed a preliminary hearing for the change in residential property to commercial property for the construction of a convenience store and fuel station on the southwest corner of Luella and Pasadena Blvd.

First of all this is a residential area. There are no businesses on Luella except close to Spencer. I'm not really sure how the residents feel but as a citizen of Deer Park for 50 years I think we have enough convenience stores.

Putting a business like that is going to lower property values in that area as well as cause problems at an already busy intersection. I do not understand why the Planning and Zoning Commission of our city feels like it's a good idea to keep allowing businesses to encroach into our neighborhoods.

Deer Park FFA member Garrett Soto recently participated in the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Calf Scramble and succeeded in catching a calf. By capturing a calf, Soto earned $1,750 toward a steer of his choice.

Over the next year, Soto will raise this steer and show it at the 2018 HLSR event where he will have an opportunity at scholarships and prize money toward his college plans.

During the next 12 months, Soto will take the steer to progress shows to get the animal used to being in the show ring and around other animals. This opportunity will also give Soto an idea of the competition at the 2018 Houston show.

Like many of his classmates, Soto is at the FFA barn twice a day for several hours. He has played for the football team for three years and has maintained a GPA that has kept him in the top 7 percent of his class.

Soto will also be showing a steer and goat at the Pasadena Livestock Show and Rodeo in September.

Join the Friends of the Art Park Players for the annual “Puttin’ on the Ritz” mixer on Thursday, March 30 beginning at 6 p.m.

The event will include a musical revue, a fashion show and silent/live auctions, all of which will benefit the Friends of the Art Park Players Scholarship and Internship Fund.

“Our 2017 ‘Puttin’ on the Ritz’ event is themed ‘Let the Good Times Roll,’ and we’re going to have lots of fun while raising support for a very important cause,” said Susan Mele, Theatre Supervisor. “Emcees Tim Culp and Brock Bihm will take us through a great program including comedy, a music revue featuring your favorite music from the 50s and 60s, a fashion show with volunteers who are very active in the Deer Park community, and a whole lot more.

“We will also be auctioning off a Galveston weekend, a gambling trip and large basket items in our live and silent auctions, and all the proceeds will benefit the Friends’ scholarship/internship fund.”

For the ticket price of $30, attendees will enjoy a feast of heavy hors d’oeuvres and decadent desserts, with the show beginning promptly at 7 p.m.

Fashions featured in the show will be provided by Adelaide’s Boutique and Casanova’s Downfall.

“The support we are able to raise during this event means so much to the recipients – last year, we were able to provide $12,000 in scholarships and internships,” Mele said. “Make sure to get your tickets today!”

“Puttin’ on the Ritz” will be held at the Municipal Court and Theatre Building, located at 1302 Center Street in Deer Park.

Tickets may be reserved by calling the Art Park Players Box Office at 281-794-2448. For more information about the event, contact Mele at 281-478-7288.

Library hosts discussion on New London School tragedy

Written by Bobby Vasquez. Posted in Community

125logo smallThis month marks the 80th anniversary of one of the biggest tragedies in Texas history. On an ordinary day at the London School in East Texas, the spark from an instructor’s electric sander detonated a mixture of air and natural gas that had built up underneath the school.

The explosion blew the roof off the building and sent debris hundreds of feet away. It is estimated that more than 300 people died in the disaster, most of them students. How did the families and survivors live with the effects of this great loss?

On Friday, March 10, Professor Marcus Turner of San Jacinto College Central Campus will speak about the deadly event and its aftermath. The presentation is titled “Etched in Memory: The New London School Explosion, 1937.” The program will begin at 11 a.m. in the library’s meeting room.
