A group of protesters gathered at police headquarters Wednesday in support of a Guatemalan woman arrested by Deer Park Police and later turned over to Homeland Security. Supporters said Lucia Montes-Rodas was unlawfully detained for driving without a license, even though she had identification issued by the consular’s office.

City appoints Sandberg as parks director

Longtime Deer Park Parks and Recreation supervisor Charlie Sandberg has been tabbed to lead the department as its newest director. Sandberg, who had previously filled the role as park and recreation’s interim director, succeeds Scott Swigert who left the city earlier this year to become assistant city manager in Mont Belvieu.

Battleship Texas reopens Saturday

After nearly a week of emergency repairs, the Battleship Texas will reopen to the public Saturday at 10 a.m. The ship was closed after leaks in the ship's hull caused it to list 8 degrees starboard. The ship is open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Hurricane season has arrived and a proposed storm surge supression system to protect the upper Texas Coast is still gaining traction. Morgan's Point Mayor Michel Bechtel visited the Deer Park Rotary Club to discuss the "Ike Dike" and the push for federal funding to build the structure.

Leaks force closure of Battleship Texas

The Battleship Texas remains closed until further notice because of multiple leaks on the ship. Texas Parks and Wildlife states the park surrounding the ship remains open, however visitors are not allowed on the aging war machine.

Council approves all items at Tuesday's meeting

Deer Park City Council hosted its regular workshop and council meeting Tuesday evening. Council unanimously approved all items on its agenda, while choosing to not rebid the revised plans for the Maxwell Center Renovation, Expansion and Parking Lot project. The next regularly scheduled council workshop and meeting is June 21.
