Janice Anne Jeys passed away on Thursday, April 20, 2017, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was 63. Janice was born on November 1, 1953, in Newport News, Virginia. A “military brat,” she spent her youth moving often, eventually graduating from La Porte High School in 1971. Janice studied life drawing and biology at the University of Houston. Her passion for creating art and her fascination with biology led her to become a medical illustrator. As the only illustrator on staff at the University of Texas Dental School, she worked directly with anatomists, performing dissections when required to produce illustrations. After visiting her niece Jacquie in her Montessori classroom, she was so struck by the engagement of the children that she felt called to begin studying the Montessori Method. After earning her American Montessori Society (AMS) certification, she began teaching at the Southampton Montessori School in Houston. She began teaching at St. Catherine's Montessori in Houston in 1998, and from that moment she felt as though she had come home. Janice adored St. Catherine's and dedicated her life not only to teaching children in the classroom, but also in the Atrium, where she led them to a love of Christ and the liturgy that they all carry with them to this day. Janice earned a master of arts in pastoral studies from Aquinas Institute of Theology in St. Louis and taught the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd at St. Catherine's as well as Trinity Episcopal Church, where she was a long-time parishioner and employee. She established and founded the church’s Atrium there, and taught the children on Sundays for many years. In addition to Montessori education, Janice had a passion for art and was an incredibly talented artist, although she would insist that she was a better art teacher than artist. She created an art studio in her living room and spent summers teaching children (and a few adults) the concepts of color and light, hue, dimension and perspective. The artwork that Janice could draw out of children as young as three was absolutely breathtaking. She touched more lives, both directly and indirectly, than she could possibly ever fathom, and those who loved her will carry her spirit with them forever. Janice is survived by her brother, Thomas Henry Jeys, nieces Mary Josephine Jeys, Jacquelyn Anne Jeys and Martha DeAngelis, and multiple great nieces and nephews. She is also survived by the hundreds of children whose lives she touched as a long-time Montessori guide and catechist devoted to the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. A memorial service will take place Tuesday, May 2, at 4:30 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1015 Holman St., Houston, 77004, with a reception following at the church. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations in Janice’s name to Aquinas Institute of Theology, 23 South Spring Ave., St. Louis, MO 63108.
